Summer & Sunscreen
According to the Department of Health Services, Arizona is ranked #2 in the world in skin cancer incidence rates. Skin cancer is treatable if caught early, but you can minimize the risks if you properly prepare your skin for sun exposure. Although it is important to practice sun safety year round, it is especially important to protect your skin during the summer months, as we spend plenty of time outdoors.
Effective Sunscreens:
Dermatologists recommend the use of broad spectrum products which protect against Ultraviolet A and Ultraviolet B rays (UVA/UVB). You want protection against these types because UVB rays cause sunburn and UVA rays penetrate the skin more deeply and therefore cause premature aging. BOTH of these rays can cause skin cancer. The Sun Protection Factor (SPF) tells you how well a product blocks UVB rays. Although no SPF can screen out 100% of UVB rays, the higher the SPF, the more beneficial. However, this does not mean you can expose your skin to the sun for longer periods of time than those wearing lower factor.
For example, SPF 15 screens out 93% of UVB rays and SPF 30 screens out 97% of UVB rays.
Effective Use:
The recommended amount of sunscreen is 1.5 ounces, which is approximately the size of a shot glass. You should apply your sunscreen about 15 minutes before sun exposure. Additionally, re-apply every two hours and after swimming, drying off, and perspiring. There is no such thing as water proof sunscreen, but it can be water resistant. This only means the product stays on the skin longer after it is wet. Re-apply every two hours as with all other sunscreen.
Don’t Forget:
When applying sunscreen it is important to not overlook areas like your lips, ears, hair part, hands, décolletage, and your feet. If you expect to be in the sun for longer than 10-15 minutes apply sunscreen underneath your make-up even if it already has an SPF. Always apply your sunscreen after you have cleansed and moisturized your skin.
Red Mountain Med Spa offers a variety of pharmaceutical grade skincare lines, such as Skin Medica, Obagi, NIA-24, and Colorscience, which all include sunscreen options that have The Skin Cancer Foundation’s Seal of Recommendation. As May is Skin Cancer Awareness month, we are currently offering 20% of all sunscreen products! Stop by one of our locations today, as any one of our licensed aestheticians would be happy to discuss which sunscreen option would be best for you.

Question:
Dear Dr. Bentz,
I currently take very good care of my skin. I make sure to always where broad spectrum sunscreen and I have minimized the amount of time I spend in direct sunlight. Unfortunately, I didn’t do this when I was younger and I have the sun damage and sun spots to prove it. Could you suggest any treatments that can help with the sun damage I have done?
Sincerely,
- Stephanie from Chandler
Answer:
Dear Stephanie,
The IPL FotoFacial is an excellent option for treating your sun damage and this laser treatment involves little or no downtime. The IPL FotoFacial is a gentle, non-invasive treatment that improves the appearance of photoaged skin, removes age spots, most benign brown pigments and redness caused by broken capillaries. The IPL Fotofacial can be used to treat any area of the body, with the most common areas being the face, neck, chest and hands. A treatment typically takes about 30 minutes and with each treatment you will see gradual improvement, which yields excellent long-term results.
Chemical Peels are also great for treating sun damage, age spots, unevenly pigmented skin and they will also stimulate, firm and tighten the skin. If you are looking for a complete skin care line, the Obagi Nu-Derm line would be perfect for treating brown spots, hyperpigmentation, and the overall tone and texture of the skin.
For more information on skin care products and treatments, schedule a complimentary consultation with one of our Licensed Aestheticians today to determine the right treatment for you!
Sincerely,
Dr. Bentz
