Water & Weight Loss!

Water is incredibly important when it comes to weight loss. Specifically, when you are on a weight loss program, like HCG or Appetite Suppressants, you are losing fat at a very rapid rate. Fat cells contain lots of water, which will also be lost when you lose the fat. This happens so rapidly that even though you are drinking lots of water, you can still become dehydrated very easily. Patients with even mild dehydration will have a much harder time losing weight and will plateau more frequently. By drinking lots of water (2 Liters or 10 glasses a day) and taking potassium, this will aid in your weight loss and prevent dehydration symptoms such as; lightheadedness, muscle cramps, tingling in hands or feet, and fatigue.

Drink More, Lose More?

It has always been suggested through experience, that water promotes weight loss, but there has really been little scientific information that has been offered before now. A recent study from Scientists at Virginia Tech found that by drinking just two 8-ounce glasses of water before each meal, will actually help people lose weight. The study also found that those who drank two cups of water right before eating a meal, ate between 75 to 90 fewer calories during the meal.

The study included 48 adults between ages 55 and 75, who were divided into two groups. One of the groups drank two cups of water before each meal and the other didn't. All participates followed a low-calorie diet throughout the study. After 12 weeks, those that drank water, lost about 15.5 pounds, compared to non-water drinking dieters who only lost 11 pounds. The water drinkers were more successful after 12 weeks, and they also kept the weight off for a full year after they had completed the weight loss study. More importantly, most water drinkers, followed for an additional 12 months, not only kept the weight off, but they even lost another 1 to 2 pounds.

The Bottom Line

This evidence doesn't mean that good old water is the weight loss cure, but it does further show just how important water is in weight loss. Simply by drinking enough water, you can stay hydrated and actually lose weight. This could be for the simple reason that water has no calories and fills up the stomach, making you less hungry. Plus, you will save calories if the water is replacing sweet-tasting calorie-containing beverages, such as soda, juice and sweetened tea.

It isn't just important to drink plenty of water when on a weight loss program, but it is also very important to continue to drink lots of water in the Maintenance and Life Maintenance phases of your program. Water can be another tool used to enhance your weight loss outcome.
